GOP presidential nominee John McCain told a press conference in Columbus, Ohio that by 2013, he expects that most US troops will be home from their tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that violence in those regions will be "spasmodic" but reduced.
McCain has previously said that under his presidency, US forces would remain in both regions for as long as necessary, drawing heavy criticism from Democrats and anti-war advocates.
